Reverse Speech

An Emerging Field. A Second Language We Already Speak.

Reverse Speech is the practice of listening to spoken recordings in reverse. It is a metaphoric language that expresses meaning through metaphor and archetypal themes rather than literal speech. Some describe it as the voice of the soul — a hidden layer of communication that appears to speak from somewhere deeper than our everyday words.

When speech is played in reverse, our platform identifies meaningful words, metaphors, and archetypal patterns, integrating them into a coherent interpretation. Archetypes are universal symbols or recurring characters — such as the hero, the mentor, the shadow, or the journey — that reflect common human experiences. They may appear as names or symbolic placeholders rather than references to specific individuals. In these cases, a name represents an archetypal role or theme within the communication rather than identifying a particular person.

The interpretation is guided by a structured framework that considers validation principles, metaphor analysis, archetypal patterns, and the broader context in which the reversal appears.

How It Works

Upload & Process. Upload your video or audio and we process it through a structured analysis pipeline.

1

Ingest

Your recording is securely received locally and prepared within a private workspace for analysis.

2

Detect Speech

The platform identifies each spoken segment within the recording and separates speech from pauses, music, and background ambience.

3

Reverse Each Spoken Segment

Each spoken segment is reversed through a consistent audio-processing pipeline, creating the reversed audio used for the analysis process.

4

Transcribe the Reverse

The reversed audio is analyzed and transcribed as perceived English. The resulting transcript represents the closest phonetic interpretation of the reversed audio.

5

Dub and Caption

The reversed speech is synchronized back into the original footage. The finished video allows comparison between the reversed audio and the original forward words.

6

Interpret (Free)

A written Gist and interpretive summary are included as a complimentary part of the experience. The interpretation is informed by Reverse Speech methodology, incorporating recurring metaphors, archetypal patterns, categories, and overarching themes. Audio playback is also available as an optional feature.

Your First Analysis

Start with a simple recording. A great place to begin is with a short recording. You might say your name, your pet’s name, your favorite place to vacation, or any other simple thought that comes to mind. These are simply suggestions to help you get started. Even one second of speech can provide meaningful material for analysis.

Start Small

The most effective first recordings are often:

  • Short and focused
  • Clear spoken words or phrases
  • Recorded with minimal background noise
  • A single thought, statement, or expression

We Recommend Beginning With

  • 1–3 second clips for your first introduction — saying your full name is a great place to start
  • 7–16 second recordings for a focused analysis
  • Up to around 30 seconds as you become familiar with the process

There are no strict rules. Every recording is unique, and the ideal length depends on the clarity of the speech and the purpose of the analysis.

About The Playback Video

The Playback Video is designed to communicate the clearest expression of the reversed communication as a whole, rather than capture every possible word that may be perceived.

The Playback Video is a linguistic rendering of the communication, not a literal phonetic transcript.

Understanding Silence in Analysis

Silence is a normal part of the Reverse Speech process. When “Silence” appears in The Playback Video, it indicates that no rendered reverse transcription was produced for that spoken segment. This does not indicate a processing error — not every spoken segment will contain a recognizable reversal pattern.

When silence is displayed, the Gist and interpretation remain part of the complete analysis experience. The absence of a rendered reversal is itself meaningful context within the broader analysis, and the surrounding speech, metaphors, and themes are still examined as part of the full interpretation.

Silence is not a limitation of the technology. It is an expected outcome within the natural variation of speech analysis, and each recording — including moments of silence — contributes to the overall understanding of the communication.

The Best Way to Approach Your Recording

Reverse Speech analysis works best when your recording is created with clarity and intention. The following guidelines will help you achieve the most meaningful and accurate results.

1. Frame Your Inquiry Clearly

When seeking guidance on a decision, phrase your statement as though the decision has already been made. Speaking in a decisive way allows deeper internal responses to emerge more clearly. You may also simply state that you wish to know about a situation. For example: “I wish to know if this path is right for me.” Clear intention often produces clearer results.

2. Understanding Where the Reversals Come From

Different practitioners describe the source of Reverse Speech in different ways. Some describe it as the voice of the unconscious mind, others as the superconscious self, and some as the voice of the soul communicating alongside conscious awareness. It is often described as an aspect of the self that is different from the ego — the conscious identity we use to navigate our daily experiences.

From this perspective, Reverse Speech is interpreted as reflecting underlying thoughts, emotions, motivations, and patterns that may exist beneath our everyday conscious expression. The interpretations are drawn from your own recorded speech and are intended to provide another perspective for reflection, exploration, and self-understanding.

3. Speak Naturally and Authentically

Speak in your normal voice and rhythm. Do not script or rehearse your words. Natural, spontaneous speech produces the most genuine reversals.

4. Use Emotion and Personal Significance When Relevant

Speech connected to genuine emotion or meaningful topics often produces stronger and more revealing reversals.

5. Keep the Recording Clear and Focused

Short, focused recordings of approximately 7–16 seconds often provide the most precise results. Even a single second of speech can contain meaningful material.

6. Handle Longer Recordings Thoughtfully

Longer recordings can be analyzed, but dividing them into shorter segments often produces a more focused analysis.

7. YouTube Recordings Can Be Explored

You may upload a full YouTube URL and allow the analysis to process the video. If the results do not provide many reversals, or if you would like a more focused analysis, consider dividing the video into shorter segments before uploading.

8. Allow for Multiple Interpretations

In some cases, a reversal may be heard in more than one way. These variations are considered within the overall analysis and interpretation process.

9. Understand Blended Expressions

Reverse Speech can occasionally combine elements of two words, creating what may sound like a hybrid word or blended expression. This is a recognized part of the analysis process.

10. Understand (Silence)

In rare instances, the word “silence” may be displayed during the process. This does not necessarily mean there is no audible content; in some cases, you may still hear reversed speech or other audio elements. More insight into the meaning and context of (silence) can be found within The Gist as part of the overall analysis.

Closing Note

Approach your recording with openness and curiosity. Reverse Speech is a tool for insight and self-understanding, and each analysis offers an opportunity for deeper awareness.

For the clearest results, see our Recording Guidelines & Analysis Notes in the FAQ.

The Gist

Every reversal is accompanied by The Gist — a concise interpretation that summarizes the central message revealed through the analysis.

The Gist brings together the reversal, its metaphors, recurring patterns, and overall context into a clear, easy-to-understand explanation. Rather than focusing on individual words alone, it captures the broader meaning that emerges when the reversal is viewed as a whole.

Written in plain language, The Gist is designed to help you quickly understand key insights while remaining grounded in the available evidence and context. It serves as a starting point for deeper exploration, not a final conclusion.

Whether your analysis is personal, professional, or research-based, The Gist provides a clear summary that makes the interpretation accessible, memorable, and practical.

The Living Archive

Every analysis becomes part of a growing body of knowledge — only if you want it to.

The Living Archive securely stores your reversals, transcripts, interpretations, metaphors, and themes in one organized, searchable place. As your archive grows, you can revisit past analyses, discover recurring patterns, and follow the evolution of conversations over time.

Privacy is always your choice. You decide whether an analysis is saved to The Living Archive or remains private. Nothing is shared publicly unless you choose to share it.

By preserving analyses across multiple recordings, The Living Archive makes it possible to recognize recurring metaphors, revisit important insights, compare conversations, and build a deeper understanding over time.

Whether you use it as a personal journal, a research resource, or a professional reference library, The Living Archive grows with you — turning individual analyses into a lasting record of discovery, while keeping you in control of your data.

The Story of the Reversal

Every reversal has a story.

A single phrase spoken in reverse rarely tells the whole story on its own. Its meaning becomes clearer when viewed alongside the conversation, the emotions being expressed, and the patterns that surround it.

The Story of the Reversal is a short, narrated video that brings these elements together into a clear visual explanation. It combines the forward speech, the reversal, and the interpretation to show how they connect and how they may be understood within the larger context of the recording.

Rather than focusing on isolated words or phrases, we examine the broader conversation to develop a more complete narrative. We look for recurring themes, metaphors, emotional cues, and relationships between the forward and reverse speech to provide a thoughtful interpretation.

The goal is not to tell you what to believe, but to offer a structured perspective that may help you explore the conversation, its underlying dynamics, and the possible significance of the reversal.

The Story of the Reversal is a condensed, narrative version of the Gist. It transforms the written interpretation into a short, narrated experience that brings the key themes, context, and insights together in a way that is easier to understand and reflect on.

The Story of the Reversal reel is an optional feature that can be generated for each analysis. After generating the first reel, you have the opportunity to create a second version, allowing you to compare both and choose the one you prefer. Once generated, the selected reel can be shared wherever you choose, including social media platforms.

A Brief History

The ability to record and replay sound began with Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph in 1877, making recorded speech available for preservation, playback, and examination in entirely new ways.

As recording technology advanced throughout the twentieth century, the ability to reverse recorded audio became a feature of sound engineering and audio production, allowing speech and other recordings to be played backward for technical, creative, and experimental purposes.

The systematic study of reversed speech developed later through the work of David John Oates, whose research introduced a structured approach for examining reversed speech as a form of linguistic observation and interpretation.

Development of Reverse Speech

According to David John Oates, Reverse Speech was discovered in late 1983 in Perth, Western Australia, after he repaired a malfunctioning Sony Walkman that unexpectedly played recordings in reverse. While listening to reversed speech, he reported hearing coherent English phrases that appeared to correspond with the meaning and emotional content of the forward conversation.

That discovery became the foundation of more than four decades of research and development. Oates expanded Reverse Speech into a comprehensive methodology that includes classifications of reversals, a validity scale, analytical procedures, interpretation guidelines, and the Reverse Speech Metaphor Dictionary. He established the Reverse Speech Institute, published Reverse Speech: Voices from the Unconscious (1991), released the Reverse Speech Metaphor Dictionary (2002), expanded that work in 2008, and trained practitioners around the world.

While Reverse Speech continues to be explored outside mainstream scientific frameworks, Oates’ work represents a significant contribution to the development of a structured approach for examining and interpreting reversed speech.

Interpretation vs. Fact

Reverse Speech analysis examines the reversed audio within a recording and explores the possible meaning of the patterns and phrases that emerge. The transcript documents how the reversed audio is perceived, while the Gist offers an interpretation of possible themes and insights. As with any interpretive process, the meaning and significance of a reversal are ultimately for the listener to evaluate.
